23rd OF May

Asphalt shingles are widely used on residential houses in the United States, including the Atlanta area. This is because the are very economically priced compared to other Atlanta roofing materials, they are quickly installed by Atlanta roofing contractors, relatively easy to repair and replace, durable and can last for a long time, and they are available in different colors and styles. Asphalt shingles can either be made from fiberglass or organic materials.

Organic asphalt shingles are manufactured from recycled felt paper that is asphalt saturated to make it waterproof, then coated with adhesive asphalt into which the ceramic granules are ingrained. Organic asphalt shingles also have about 40 percent more asphalt than the common fiberglass asphalt shingle making it bulkier, heavier and more expensive. Furthermore, because it contains more asphalt, it is less environmental friendly compared to its fiberglass counterpart.

Fiberglass asphalt shingles are made with a base layer of glass layer reinforcing mat that is coated with asphalt that contains mineral fillers making it waterproof, and then topped with ceramic granules to protect the asphalt coating from UV light and also make the material fire resistant. Since it contains less asphalt than the organic shingles, it is more durable, lighter in weight and more fire resistant, and more environmental friendly.

Asphalt shingles, be they organic or fiberglass, measure 12×36 inches and come in two different styles: 3-tab shingles which is the basic and most cost effective style, and Laminated or Architectural, and Premium.

3-tab shingles have distinctive tabs made along their long lower edge, where a single shingle looks like three different pieces. This type of shingle is thinner compared to the other styles which contribute to its less dimensional look.

Laminated or Architectural shingles do not have tabs but their lower parts are laminated with extra layer of asphalt that gives this type of shingle a contoured, dimensional look. Because of the curb appeal for homes value and the fact it has better waterproofing capability, it has become a very popular choice among homeowners. It also often has longer warranty and is available in varying designs and colors; they are even made to imitate the look of natural wood and slate shingles.

Premium shingles differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. They are regular shingles but with more design and material improvements. Improvements may include being double laminated, fiberglass reinforced or adhesion. Premium shingles are a little pricier than regular shingles because of the improvements done for its longevity and durability but it also comes with longer warranty to compensate for the price.

Aside from design improvements, asphalt shingles are also available in different colors. Depending on your taste, style and color of your Atlanta home you can find the right color that would fit your needs. Color hues range from pale, medium and dark shades of gray, beige, red, brown, blue and green. Manufacturers have also adopted energy-saving, cool roof technology that helps minimize the amount of heat absorbed by the roof which would enable you to save money on cooling system during the hot Atlanta months.  It is always recommended that when putting asphalt shingles on your home to use a licensed Atlanta roofing contractor to ensure that they are properly installed and backed by a warranty.
